What is gender discrimination?

Gender discrimination, or the unequal treatment of the sexes, occurs when one person is treated less favourably, because of his/her sex, than another person of the opposite sex in a similar situation. The reason for the unequal treatment is most often prejudice and attitudes, which stop people from seeing the specific person – his/her value, skills and abilities. Traditional attitudes to gender roles, for example, may influence an employer to decide on a candidate for recruitment or promotion on the basis of his/her sex, which leads to discrimination.

In Estonia, gender discrimination is banned by the Gender Equality Act.
